January 2012

January 1 -  Celebrated 2012 beginnings in Mexico with Betsy and Uncle Frank. We saw fireworks shoot in to the sky above the ocean, right in front of the condo balcony - boy, was it a bright way to ring in the new year!

Music, Venezuelan arepas, wine and conversation
The band plays at Quique and Maria's house
Al Son del Tunduki - the African Diaspora in Andean Latin America.  It features works/performances by poets Michael Warr and Avotcja Jiltronilro. Al Son del Tunduki also includes a multi-media component of art, photography and archival images created by graphic designer Guillermo Prado and videographer Alexio Goncalves. At Tuesday’s meeting, Quijeremá played a couple of the pieces, talked about the project in more detail and started the conversation on how to incorporate the ITCH.

It was so lovely to learn more about these talented musicians, poets and singers.  I look forward to seeing their project grow!

January 15-17 - Fancy Food Show at Moscone Center SF

The show featured 1,300 exhibitors

This was my second show working for exhibitors at the annual Fancy Food Show in San Francisco.  Last year I worked for a French exhibitor.   This year I helped out at a yogurt booth and then a tea booth.  It was fun to have some samples on my break and to learn about some of the new products coming to the marketplace soon.

One of my favorite vendors was an Oakland-based company named "Fearless" which sells raw organic chocolate.  The dark chocolate sample was so good!

January 18-20 Warm-Ups for Improvisation and Tuning

Karen Nelson

I participated in this three-day workshop, which culminated in a house performance with Margit and Karen.  Karen’s 35-year dance and performance practice has been directly influenced by Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and Lisa Nelson and their respective work in Contact Improvisation, Material for the Spine and Tuning Scores, and through collaboration with many others in venues around the world. She co-founded the Breitenbush Jam, Dance Ability, Image Lab, Diverse Dance, among other projects.  More information via Art Workouts and Margit Galanter.
